FAQs
How can you support your child in play therapy?
Consistency is important to your child establishing a sense of safety with me the play therapist. Try not to ask your child about the activities in each session as this can create pressure to explain things they may not yet fully understand. It may also impact what they feel they can share in play therapy.
Please be respectful of your child’s space in therapy, allowing them to share with me at their own pace. If you have specific concerns, it is best to arrange a time to discuss them with me separately.
I completely understand you will have your own feelings about play therapy. I work with the whole family in mind. As part of my process, you will be invited to attend regular review meetings with me approximately every 8 weeks.
How long will my child need play therapy for?
It is difficult to say how long play therapy will be needed for, each child and situation is unique. On average, an intervention lasts for 20 weeks. Occasionally, the work is finished before this time, however, it is also not unusual for the intervention to last beyond 20 weeks.
Is my child the right age for play therapy?
Whilst this is not a straight forward answer, the general rule is that I see children as young as three and up to the age of 14. If you feel that play therapy could be beneficial for your child, please do get in contact with me and we can discuss in more detail how it can be tailored to your child’s age and development needs.
What if my child doesn’t play very much?
Children use the playroom in many different ways. For instance, some children may almost solely access the art materials and rarely seek out the toys. Other children may be constantly active and engaged with the toys. Older children may use their art and creative expression as a way of encouraging conversation. There is no ‘right way’ of doing play therapy.
